Case Study
VISO Design Engineers the Heart of The Joyce
Where Art Meets American Cuisine
At the center of The Joyce, Miami’s art-forward steakhouse by Love Lake Studio, stands a bar that is as technically ambitious as it is visually seductive. VISO was entrusted with the full design engineering, fabrication, and lighting integration of this statement centerpiece — a suspended glass and metal structure that anchors the room both functionally and emotionally.
Design Intent :
Tucked away on Española Way, the design had to build intrigue from the street yet feel exclusive once inside.
The interiors would serve as a living gallery, layering art and intimacy, enveloping diners in curated works and creating a dialogue between food and culture.
Use of custom light and craft as narrative tools:
With VISO, custom manufactured restaurant bar structure was engineered to merge sculpture, function, and hospitality performance. Every custom-made material, proportion, and choice of light output and direction had to elevate the sense of closeness without crowding.
The steakhouse typology is reinterpreted through playful nods to Americana, infused with South Beach drama.
Challenges :
Spatial Constraints
A compact footprint demanded the maximization of seating without sacrificing comfort or disrupting operational flow.
Large-Scale Glass Railings
The design required a 13 ft x 11 ft suspended glass railing system to display delicate yet heavy drinkware. VISO needed to ensure the structure was both visually light and structurally sound, despite minimal suspension points.
Spanning the full 13 ft x 11 ft, the bar’s suspended frame supports glass railings that appear to float effortlessly beneath a seamless, glossy black canopy. These railings hold fragile but weighty glasses, presenting both an aesthetic and engineering challenge. VISO's solution preserved the illusion of weightlessness while delivering the necessary strength.
Precision Fabrication & Assembly
Despite its large scale, VISO engineered, and custom manufactured the bar structure in modular components for efficient shipping and streamlined on-site assembly. Tight tolerances were critical to ensure clean, seamless joints and an overall polished finish.
Material Consistency
A glossy black metal plate, extending the full length of the fixture, was required to appear flawless—free of finish defects or surface inconsistencies. Material precision and finish uniformity were paramount.
Custom Detail Requirements
Ceiling-mounted posts connecting the custom restaurant fixture required a custom mold to achieve precise fluting, in alignment with the client, Love Lake Studio’s design vision.
Lighting Integration
Custom integrated lighting was needed to both illuminate and dramatize the bar zone while preserving natural interaction for guests and staff. VISO also had to ensure that drinkware remained easily accessible for bartenders—supporting quick, efficient, high-quality service without compromising design impact.
