Atria
Setting New Heights with Custom RGBW Panels at Atria I
VISO design-engineers and manufactures this immense custom light installation that displays programmed light panels that respond to the astronomical clock. This ingenuity automatically dims the lights according to the time of day.
Brief
VISO Lighting worked in collaboration with B+H Architects to design-engineer and fabricate a custom lighting solution for a large atrium in Toronto. In particular, this project involved a custom light fixture that spanned 5 floors at 450" tall. The original design intent also required RGBW LED lights for specific uses while supporting a specific design and functionality. In this situation, the custom light installation displays programmed light panels that respond to the astronomical clock to automatically dim according to the time of day.
Client Need
The custom atrium fixture requried a specific lift system to be created and integrated into the light fixture to support its grand size. This resulted in extensive consultation and engineering with Peter Albrecht Company for the pulley system. Furthermore, the custom steel frame supports 2 tonnes, which is enough to easily hoist and lower the grand-scale light. Therefore, ease of maintenance is secured with this added feature.
Challenges
With an illuminated structure this large, fabricating something of this stature requires intricate planning, ensuring that the structure can successfully be installed into the space. In this instance, coordination between multiple parties played an integral role in its completion. From the GC, engineer, lift company, factories, etc., good communication was key. As well, all the mounting locations, calculations, and parts needed to work together and be aligned to make this project work.
