Where Coastal Calm Meets Craftsmanship: Lighting Earls Las Olas

Designing Light for a Rooftop Oasis

The Earls Las Olas lighting project represents a masterclass in design-meets-engineering. From managing wind loads with invisible strength to hand-crafting slump glass, each element was a thoughtful interplay between technical excellence and visual serenity.

The project stands as a showcase of the rewarding partnership between VISO and the Earls design team—pushing the boundaries of what custom hospitality lighting can achieve.

Design Intent :

VISO partnered with Earls' design team to design engineer and fabricate custom lighting solutions that were both technically resilient and artistically aligned with the project’s organic, rattan-inspired design language.

The aesthetic brief focused on delivering a beachy, Mediterrean-inspired environment using:

Rattan and wood-like textures

Natural airflow and light permeability

Custom glass forms

A balance of elegance and durability

VISO's challenge was to honour this intent while navigating the technical constraints of a rooftop setting open to wind loads, sun exposure, and high guest turnover.

Challenges :

The rooftop portion of Earls Las Olas features an open-air concept, making all suspended fixtures vulnerable to wind movement. A major challenge was ensuring the stability of large-scale rattan-inspired chandeliers without compromising the open, airy aesthetic.

Material Innovation :

Simulated Wood Through Hydrographic Dipping
To achieve the warmth of oak while maintaining the strength of metal, VISO produced five hydrographic wood chandeliers using a process where metal frames are dipped in a hydrographic solution that simulates a wood grain finish.

Result:
The chandeliers appear like natural oak, but perform like industrial-grade fixtures—ideal for humid and coastal environments.

Custom Glass Fabrication :

A significant part of the design included slump glass, a textured and imperfect glass that brought a handcrafted and organic quality to the space.

Challenge:
No standard glass options met the design team’s expectations.

Solution:
VISO worked directly with its glass production partners to develop an extensive molding process, ensuring each piece of glass matched the desired aesthetic while meeting technical and safety standards. The handcrafted slump glass became a signature detail of the final installation.

Solutions :

VISO developed a stabilized metal structure stem, internally reinforced to withstand wind forces. Each rattan shade was suspended using aircraft cable, maintaining a delicate visual profile while delivering the structural resilience required.

The rattan design remained “open,” allowing airflow to pass through each structure, reducing resistance and swaying while preserving the natural look.
