Brief

Amelia Gene is located in a historic former foundry. The restaurant pays homage to its factory origins with exposed beams and unhindered architectural features, as well as a soaring ceiling that highlights the new, modern designs of the restaurant that have transformed machine shop into elegant eatery. The dimly but beautifully lit dining room sprawls beneath incredible glass light fixtures and floating bespoke pendants.

Client Need

To enliven the original foundry foundation, the design vision was to create a canopy feature around the existing building beams covering the ceiling, surrounding the inspiration of burning embers.

Challenge

A total of 1953 pieces of hand-blown seeded glass crystals were designed and made in silver amber and black. The cables suspending each fragment had to appear invisible to give the appearance of each fragment floating across the ceiling. Each piece was mapped out on the original plan, by size. There were six crystal sizes in total and scattered larger LED lights throughout.

Solution

The ceiling was framed in mirrored copper, which in turn provides the illusion of height, and further space, also hiding the heritage beams.
The glass crystals were suspended individually and held as bespoke pendants with reflective silver rods at varying heights to give the appearance of floating crystal rocks.
The pillars could have been a design obstacle, however the framing created around the crystal rocks was an additional design feature, the result created the illusion of voluminous crystals.
